Saint John of God Brothers

Message from the Religious and Collaborators of the Order’s Heritage Group

Since February 2024, the Sisters and Co-workers responsible for museums, archives and libraries of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God in Europe and the Sisters Hospitallers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus have established a permanent Working Group, and we are writing to you with this message:

Our cultural heritage is a magnificent means of transmitting values and creating bonds between the members of the Hospitaller Family, so why not put it to greater use?

In our ever-changing world, this cultural heritage is more vulnerable than ever, but at the same time it can provide valuable support for our mission of hospitality, because it bears witness to our identity, our spirituality, our values and the purpose of our actions.

But this cultural heritage needs each and every one of you.

Bequeathed to us by our founders and by those who came before us, we are all responsible for it today. Each province, each community, each centre preserves a precious, unique and indispensable part of it.

We trust that all of you will support us in preserving this heritage in your own Provinces so that we can take advantage of it today and so that future generations can also benefit from it.

Our group is here to help you preserve and enhance this shared heritage.

Our Working Group was created to reflect on the role of cultural heritage in the transmission of the charism. By undertaking joint projects and exchanging experiences, we aim to preserve, share and revitalise our common heritage at the service of Hospitality.

We have chosen to begin our work by creating a shared database on the iconography of our founders, which will be useful to all the Provinces for multiple purposes. Other projects will follow – we have no shortage of creative ideas for sharing and making Hospitality shine!
